2008 El Abuelo Grenache

Planted by my Grandfather in 1965, the Tscharke Seppeltsfield Vineyard’s old weathered Grenache vines and ancient clay and quartz soils combine to produce this outstanding wine that showcases the Barossa Valley.

Tasting Notes

Vibrant ruby red colour, deep to the core, this is superbly structured wine. Intense aromas of caramelised strawberries and sour sobs integrate perfectly with subtle French oak. The multilayered palate is opulent with rich velvety tannins that encapsulate a generosity of spice and lush tasty fruit with milk chocolate, spice and Turkish delight. A simply delicious accompaniment for char grilled chicken with a roast capsicum and black olive salsa.

Winemaking Report

The fruit is crushed and fermented in open top fermenters. Heading down boards were used to submerge the cap to ensure maximum extraction of tannins and colour. Fermentation was followed by four weeks of extended maceration before being basket pressed and racked to barrel for maturation and secondary malolactic fermentation.

Vintage Conditions

Decent Winter rainfalls set for a great Spring. With the growing season off to a good start, January and February followed with ideal mild summer weather and saw healthy vines bearing good crops. Our harvest commenced late February but the later ripening varietals were struck by the worst heatwave on record in March and it was a battle to maintain healthy vines and fruit. Fortunately these varietals have great heat tolerance and although the weather was harsh we were still blessed with magnificent wines.
