Who is the Pom?

G’day everyone, Liam here. I am the strange-sounding Englishman you may have come across at Tscharke’s Place.

How would I describe myself? A wine lover. I love studying about wine, I love the romance of making wine and most importantly... I love drinking wine. I have recently finished my WSET Level 3 in Wines and I'm starting my WSET Diploma in February 2021.

I came over from England in January 2020 to “just do a vintage”. During this time, the small matter of Coronavirus arose and I decided to stick it out in Australia for a bit longer. After winter pruning in the Barossa, I was lucky enough to be offered a job with Tscharke to help out with cellar door and develop some new vineyard sites. One thing has led to another and I am now here for the long haul. It is incredibly exciting to be part of a business that is so dynamic in, what I previously saw as, a fairly stagnant industry.

The philosophies and ideologies of Tscharke are aligned with my own - organic viticultural and winemaking practices to express the true terroir of the Barossa Valley. I firmly believe wine should speak honestly of its origin without undue manipulation. At Tscharke you can so easily get lost in the magic of wine; it is a canvas that allows the winemakers to create the most beautiful art.

My current favourite wine is the 2019 Stonewell Mataro. This is where finesse and structure harmoniously balance to create a wine that drinks beautifully now but also has great potential for ageing. This wine reminds me of Mataro (aka Mourvèdre) produced by Château de Pibarnon in Bandol, France, where world-famous Mourvèdre wines originate.
