Deep soaking winter rains that trickled into spring provided a spectacular start to the growing season. The moist soils minimised the threat of frosts, followed with a mild spring at bud break made for a promising start to an incredible vintage. Despite its dryness, the growing season was relatively mild. Warm days, cool nights and little to no disease pressure gave rise to fruit rich in flavour and naturally high acid, all with relatively modest sugar levels. The wines produced from 2021 will drink well young and many, if allowed, will cellar well to remind us of the great vintage. One of the best vintages in the recent decade.

    • Winemaking

Fruit from the three vineyards was picked in March. Each parcel was vinified individually, to highlight the character of the individual vineyards. All the grapes were destemmed and crushed into open fermenters, where they were fermented at temperatures not exceeding 25C for 10-14 days. The cap was managed with twice daily pump overs and once dry the wines were bag pressed to tank to complete MLF before being racked to oak. After 3 months of élevage on lees, the components from the three vineyards were racked, blended, and returned to a selection of French barrels (10% new) and 6.6KL French vats. A further 12-month maturation allowed the wine to come together and soften before being racked, filtered, and bottled.

    • Tasting Notes

Rich crimson colour, with purple hues at the rim. The bouquet is vibrant, alive, fresh. Aromas of Blueberry and plum jumping out of the glass, while an underlying gamey and dusty savouriness complements the fruit. Soft herbal undertones of incense and spice, together with soft oak add elegance. The palate is explosive and juicy. Vibrancy is key, with cherry, plum and forest berries as defining fruit, supported by hints of spices and herbs that stretch into a textural finish. Crunchy acidity, full body and fine tannins make up for a characterful structure. Fresh and contemporary yet timelessly Barossan, this Shiraz drinks well now and it will age nicely for a decade.
